At the start of the war, Captain Frederick Bryant of the West African Frontier Force secured French aid from Dahomey and invaded Togo to seize the naval wireless station at Kamina. A sharp action at the Chra River, near Nuatja, cost the Allies 23 killed and 50 wounded before the Germans blew up the radio station and Governor Hans Von Doring surrendered Togoland.
