The Turko-Mongol conqueror Tamerlane began a huge invasion of northern India by sending his grandson Pir-Mohammed through the Hindu Kush into the southern Punjab against Multan on the Chenab. Local commander Sarang Khan surrendered after a bloody six-month siege and the Mongols continued east with Tamerlane to the decisive battle in December near Delhi.
