While assembling in the Bay of Biscay off the port of Rochefort to escort a large merchant convoy to North America, a French naval squadron was attacked by English Admiral Sir Edward Hawke. Although heavily outnumbered, Hawke’s ships drove many of the French vessels ashore on the nearby Ile d’Aix, helping ensure Allied victory weeks later in Nova Scotia at Louisbourg.
