Turkish commander Mezid Bey was sent by Ottoman Sultan Murad II into Transylvania, where he besieged Hermannstadt (modern Sibiu) defended by Hungarians under Janos Hunyadi. After the Turks lost a reported 20,000 men, including Mezid Bey and his son killed, they were forced to withdraw. Later that year another Ottoman force was defeated at Vasaq.
