With General Herbert Kitchener’s British-Egyptian-Sudanese army advancing up the Nile to reconquer the Sudan, Mahdist commander Emir Wad Bashara attempted to block the rapids of Hafir, just north of Dongola. After two days of fighting, additional British artillery was brought up to clear the rapids. Kitchener secured Dongola and advanced towards the Atbara.
