With the outnumbered British Expeditionary Force withdrawing southwest from Mons through Le Cateau, French commander Charles Lanzerac launched an unexpected offensive into the flank of General Karl von Bulow’s advancing army. The Germans suffered a sharp check in heavy fighting between Guise and St Quentin as the Allies withdrew south to the Marne.
