As Austrians advanced into eastern Poland through Krasnik and Komárow, further south Russian commander Nikolai Ivanov sent Generals Nikolai Ruzskii and Aleksei Brusilovona counter-offensive across the Zlota Lipa, a tributary of the Dneister. Austrian General Rudolf von Bruderman was routed and fell back in disorder to the Gnila Lipa, southeast of Lemberg.
