Weeks after defeating the Turks at Vienna and Parkany, Charles V of Lorraine besieged the Danube fortress of Esztergom. When his artillery breached the walls, 4,000 Turks surrendered and were allowed to march out with their arms. Grand Vizier Kara Mustafa had three local commanders beheaded for cowardice, but he was himself later executed for failure.
