One month after victory at Killiecrankie, Scottish supporters of James II, led by Colonel Alexander Cannon, attacked Dunkeld, north of Perth, held for William III by the Cameronian Regiment under Colonel William Cleland. Although Cleland was killed, the Highlanders were heavily repulsed (despite a four to one advantage) and the Jacobite rising was virtually over.
