The people of Appenzell in northeast Switzerland rose against the Habsburg Abbot Cuno of St Gall and Duke Fredrick IV of Austria, and won valuable victories at Speicher (1403) and Stoss (1405). But when rebels attacked the loyal Imperial city of Bregenz, they were badly defeated. Appenzell was forced out of the Swiss League, although it remained a Confederate ally.
