As German troops swept into Belgium and attacked Liège, further west General Alexander von Kluck advanced on Brussels. East of the capital near Tirlement (Tienen) a hastily-assembled Belgian force tried to block the invaders but was overwhelmed. Brussels was occupied without resistance next day and King Albert and his survivors withdrew north towards Antwerp.
