General Jacques Duchesne, advancing into Madagascar through Tsarasoatra and Andriba, suffered terrible losses from malaria, and led a selected party forward against the capital Tananarive. Queen Ranavalona III surrendered after a brief bombardment, and was later exiled. Securing the whole country had cost France more than 6,000 lives, all but a handful lost to disease.
