Reinforcing the Italian invasion of northern Ethiopia after defeat at Amba Alagi and Makale, General Oreste Baratieri’s Italian-native force was rashly ordered to advance from a strong defensive position, Adowa, to seek victory for national prestige. They were virtually annihilated by Emperor Menelik’s hugely superior Ethiopian army, the worst European defeat in Africa.
