When Swiss cities joined the South German Swabian League against King Wenceslas and the House of Habsburg, Leopold III of Austria and his commander Johann von Ochenstein took an army into Switzerland. At Sempach, near Lucerne, outnumbered Swiss pikemen killed Leopold and destroyed his knights fighting dismounted. A further defeat at Nafels in April 1388 ended the war.
