On Samana Ridge, south of the Khyber Pass, Afridi and Orakzai tribesmen attacked Forts Gulistan and Lockhart, as well as the tiny intervening Sarigarhi heliograph relay station, where 21 Sikhs under Havildar Isher Singh refused to surrender. Massively overwhelmed, they fought to the death. In a unique recognition, all 21 won Britain’s highest gallantry award for Indian troops.
