Charles VII of France ended a five-year truce and invaded English Normandy, where he attacked Rouen. Despite support by John Talbot Earl of Shrewsbury, the incompetent Edmund Beaufort Duke of Somerset was defeated and surrendered the city, handing Shrewsbury over as a hostage. Further English defeat at Formigny six months later led directly to the loss of Normandy.
