With northern China secured, the great warlord Cao Cao (Ts’ao Ts’ao) turned south, where he defeated Liu Bei at Changban and soon after was blocked at Red Cliffs, on the Yangzi near Jiangling, by Liu Bei and Sun Quan of Wu. In a decisive battle on the river, Cao Cao’s fleet was destroyed and he withdrew. He later consolidated his power in the northwest at Huayin, then turned south into Hanzhong.
