Determined to finally secure control in Azerbaijan, Persian Regent Karim Khan Zand marched towards Tabriz and was met to the southeast at Qara Chaman (modern Siah Chaman) by Fath Ali Afshar, whose cavalry initially repulsed the Zand army. Karim Khan’s General Shayk Ali Khan then rallied for a great victory and the Regent moved to besiege Fath Ali at Urmiya.
