Boldly advancing towards Havana, the insurgent leader Antonio Maceo was met to the southwest by a Spanish column under Major Francisco Cirujeda marching out of Punta Brava. In a terrible blow for the cause, Maceo was defeated and killed, along with Francisco Gómez, son of rebel commander Máximo Gómez, who continued the war until American intervention.
