Having relieved the French siege of Madras (17 February), British Admiral Sir George Pocock patrolled the southeast coast of India and met French Admiral Comte Ann-Antoine d’Aché off Pondicherry. As in their previous encounters off Cuddalore and Negapatam, the result was indecisive, though d’Aché suffered heavy damage and casualties and withdrew to Mauritius.
