Insurgent leader Antonio Maceo marched east from Mantua in western Cuba where he was attacked by Spanish General Agustin Luque on the railway northeast of Pinar del Rio at Paso Real. The Cubans sustained the heavier losses in severe fighting along very extended lines, but managed to drive off the Spanish, with Luque severely wounded. Maceo soon struck back at Candelaria.
