As German commander Alexander von Kluck advanced through Mons, then wheeled north and east of Paris, French Generals Joseph Gallieni and Michel Manoury launched a bold flank attack along the Ourcq. Very intensive fighting saw von Kluck and Hans von Gronau finally beaten as part of the broader Battle of the Marne and they withdrew to the Aisne.
