Two years after the decisive Turkish repulse at Vienna, Austrian Field Marshal Aeneas Caprara advanced to besiege the powerful fortress of Neuhausel (modern Nove Zamky) in Slovakia, defended by Bohemian troops converted to Islam. Charles V of Lorraine defeated a relief army at Gran and three days later took Neuhausel by storm, killing most of the garrison.
