Days after action at Albert, French commander Joseph Joffre sent General Louis de Maud’huy on a fresh attempt to outflank the Germans between Arras and Lens. A German counter-attack under Prince Ruprecht retook Lens, and the French withdrew on Arras. The <i>"Race to the Sea"</i> soon ended at the Channel port of Nieuwport and the battle for Flanders began.
