Following a failed French attempt to recover Quebec (27 April), British forces converged on Montreal, where a siege was established by General Jeffrey Amherst, supported by Generals James Murray from Quebec and William Haviland from Lake Champlain. French Governor Pierre Rigaud, Marquis de Vaudreuil, capitulated after two days and Canada became British.
