Following his disastrous defeat at Kunersdorf (12 August), Frederick II of Prussia sent an inadequate force under General Frederick von Finck against Marshal Leopold von Daun’s Austrians at Maxen, south of Dresden. The massively outnumbered Prussians were overwhelmed and the entire army of 12,000 men surrendered. Finck was later court-martialled and imprisoned.
