Just as German forces launched a counter-attack in Lorraine, further northwest French Generals Pierre Ruffey and Fernand de Langle de Cary attacked in the Ardennes against Duke Albrecht and Prince Wilhelm. Despite local success at Virton, confused fighting in thick fog saw the French badly defeated and they retreated south to stabilise the line at Verdun.
