After a failed siege of Tanjore in August, French Governor General Comte Thomas Lally attacked Madras, on the southeast coast, defended by about 4,000 British and Indian troops under Major Stringer Lawrence. Lally captured part of the city, though Fort St George held out for two months until Admiral Sir George Pocock arrived and Lally had to withdraw.
