A month after defeat in Hesse at Wilhelmstahl, French Marshals Charles Soubise and Louis d’Estrées fell back on the Fulda, northeast of Kassel, with the right wing around Lutterberg held by Prince Franz Xavier of Saxony. Duke Ferdinand of Brunswick attacked and routed the Saxons, forcing the French army to continue withdrawing through Amoneburg to the Rhine.
