Frederick II advanced into Silesia following Prussian defeat at Landshut (23 June) and reached Liegnitz (modern Legnica), where he found himself between Austrians under Marshals Leopold von Daun and Gideon von Loudon and approaching Russians. Frederick brilliantly cut his way through the Austrians at night, inflicting over 10,000 casualties, and withdrew towards Berlin.
