The first major action of the war saw German commander Karl von Bulow invade Belgium and send Generals Otto von Emmich and Erich von Ludendorff against Liège, defended by General Gérard Leman. Despite unexpected losses, the Germans seized the city (7 August) and bombarded and took the surrounding forts. The Belgians then fell back northwest on Antwerp.
