Ladislas of Hungary and General Janos Hunyadi were turned back from invading Bulgaria at Zlatitsa and withdrew across the Balkans in extreme winter conditions, repulsing the pursuing Turks at Melshtitsa. The Christians were then ambushed near Kunovica, between Pirot and Nish in Serbia, inflicting another heavy defeat on the Turks before continuing home to Hungary.
