The Turko-Mongol Tamerlane repulsed Toktamish, Khan of the Golden Horde, at the Syr Darya, then marched north into Russia and heavily defeated his former protégé in a three-day battle at Kunduzcha, east of the Volga. Tamerlane sacked the Khan’s capital at Sarai before withdrawing to deal with rebellion in Persia. Four years later he returned to destroy Toktamish at the Terek.
