A renewed Russian offensive into Prussian Pomerania saw General Pyotr Rumyantsev lay siege to the port and fortress at Kolberg (modern Kolobrzeg), which was finally forced to surrender after six months. The capture of Kolberg gave Russia a vital strategic port on the Prussian flank, but the death of Empress Elizabeth a few weeks later took Russia out of the war.
