Facing a counter-offensive by Venice after Maderno in 1839, Milanese commander Niccolo Piccinino led a diversionary attack into Tuscany against the Venetian ally, Florence. Southeast of Florence at Anghiari, near Arezzo, Piccinino was defeated by a Florentine-Papal army under Micheletto Attendolo and Giampaolo Orsini. He was forced to withdraw and peace soon followed.
