Marcus Macrinus became Roman Emperor by conspiring in the murder of his predecessor Caracalla, then faced a conspiracy by Varius Avitus Bassianus, claiming to be the illegtimate son of his cousin Caracalla. Macrinus was in turn overthrown and killed after defeat at Immae, north of Antioch. Bassianus became Emperor as Elagabalus, but proved equally ineffectual.
