Early in the war, the American warship Charleston (Captain Henry Glass) and three transports left Honolulu to seize Guam. After a token bombardment of Fort Santa Cruz, Spanish Governor Juan Marino (who had no knowledge of the state of war or Spain’s naval defeat at Manila) surrendered the island, giving the United States its first possession in the Pacific.
