Emperor Aurangzeb attacked the Muslim Sultanates of Central India, where he captured Bijapur, then besieged Golconda fortress, west of Hyderabad, defended by Sultan Abu-l-Hasan. The Mughals suffered awful losses in costly sorties and the faulty explosion of two giant mines. Bribery finally opened the gates, ending the independent kingdom of Golconda.
