With Fort Prince George and Fort Loudoun besieged by Cherokee Chief Oconostota, General Jeffrey Amherst in Charleston sent a large relief force of Scottish regulars under Colonel Archibald Montgomerie. Attacked on the Little Tennessee River near Etchoe (modern Franklin, North Carolina), Montgomerie withdrew with 20 killed and 76 wounded.
