In the last armed Scottish resistance to the accession of William III after defeat at Dunkeld (21 August 1689), Highland forces loyal to James II rose in rebellion, led by General Thomas Buchan. Camped at Cromdale, east of Grantown in Moray, the Jacobites were attacked and routed by Royalist forces under Sir Thomas Livingstone, ending the rising.
