In an attempt to counter the French military resurgence inspired by Jeanne d’Arc, Duke Philip of Burgundy joined the English in besieging Compiègne, north of Paris. A relief army sent by Charles VII of France eventually broke the siege, but Jeanne (Joan of Arc) was captured (23 May). She was later sold to the English for trial and execution at the stake.
