In a remarkable raid on Cuba at the start of the war, American Captain Bowman H. McCalla in the warship Marblehead, with Nashville in support, attacked the cable station at Cienfuegos. Landing under severe fire, a launch party cut the cables, severing telegraph communication between Havana and Spain. Forty-nine of the men involved received the Congressional Medal of Honour.
