In a futile invasion of Ireland, French privateer Francois Thurot landed at Carrickfergus, north-east of Belfast, after a storm dispersed half his fleet. The town surrendered following a brief siege, but Thurot had insufficient forces and reembarked. When two of his three remaining ships became separated in another storm, Thurot was attacked and killed by a British squadron.
