After the Battle of the Marne blunted the German advance into France, French Generals Louis d’Esperey and Michel Maunoury and British General Sir John French counter-attacked across the Aisne against Erich von Falkenhayn’s army. The Allied offensive stabilised the front, and began the outflanking <i>"Race to the Sea"</i> through Albert and Arras to the coast.
