Invading Ireland to put down Catholic opposition, William III of England and Duke Friedrich of Schomberg led a 35,000-strong force towards Dublin and encountered the Jacobite army under James II and Comte Antonin de Lauson near Drogheda at the River Boyne. Although Schomberg was killed, William won a decisive victory and went on to capture Dublin and besiege Limerick.
