Having captured the Maratha fortress of Bhupalgarh in April, Mughal Viceroy Dilir Khan attacked Muslim Bijapur, held by his former ally Regent Sidi Mas’ud, who had joined forces with the Marathas. After a failed bombardment, and with Shivaji attacking the Mughal forces in the rear, Dilir Khan was forced to retire, ravaging the region as he withdrew.
