In order to impose a British protectorate on northern Nigeria, Sir Charles Goldie of the Royal Niger Company took 500 African troops and 30 British officers against Emir Abubakr of Nupe. Some towns quickly fell, but outside Bida he faced a determined Nupe army. The ill-armed warriors were routed by Maxim guns and artillery, and Goldie then turned against Ilorin.
