With Russia out of the war, the Prussian-British army of Duke Ferdinand of Brunswick renewed its assault on the French in Hesse. At Wilhelmstahl, near Kassel, the French suffered a costly defeat, concluded by the British cavalry of John Manners Marquis of Granby. Duke Ferdinand soon inflicted another defeat at Lutterberg and drove the French back across the Rhine.
