Four months after victory at Gruneberg, a French army under Marshals Charles Soubise and Victor-Francois Broglie invaded Westphalia. At Vellinghausen, southeast of Hamm, Broglie was driven off by Prussian Marshal Duke Ferdinand of Brunswick. The following day Soubise and Broglie were defeated when they failed to co-operate and were driven back to the Rhine.
