Advancing south into Thessaly, Ottoman commander Edhem Pasha was repulsed at Velestino and a week later sent Hakki Pasha on a second attack. In a two-day action, with heavy artillery fire from both sides, Turkish infantry assaults were driven off. With ammunition low and possible outflanking at Pharsalus, Greek Colonel Konstantinos Smolenskis withdrew east to Volo.
